Iconic British design re-issued to a new audience

An iconic furniture range by legendary British designers John and Sylvia Reid is being re-issued at Clerkenwell Design Week, thanks to a collaboration between their son Dominic Reid OBE and Nicholas Radford, son of the original manufacturer.

Recognising the opportunity posed by the resurgence and popularity of mid-century design, Dominic and Nicholas decided the time was right to revisit and re-issue the still popular designs, created by the Reids during the 1950s and 60s for Stag Furniture.

Said Dominic: “My parents’ designs have remained relevant and sought after, but their name and contribution to British design are not as well recognised as perhaps they should be.

“Nicholas, who owns Nathan Furniture, contacted me to propose the idea of a re-issue at exactly the time I had been thinking over the idea, due to the enduring appetite for mid-century design.”

Sylvia, who is now in her 90s, sanctioned the collaboration between Dominic and Nicholas, agreeing that the first design to be re-issued should be the S-Range of dining and living furniture.

Dominic added: “Way ahead of its time, the S-Range looks as stylish and cutting edge today as it did then, and it is our aim that this re-issue will promote a re-discovery and renewed appreciation for my parents’ work. The S-Range is a great modernist design which by definition has stood the test of time and we are very excited to see this iconic British collection re-issued at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Fair.”

A total of 13 pieces have been recreated for the launch at Clerkenwell taking place May 22-24. The re-issued designs replicate the originals exactly, incorporating unique design details such as the distinctive V shaped brushed satin nickel legs, as well as being crafted from the same original materials, which include teak, beech and black laminate detail. Each piece also carries a limited-edition stamp of authenticity.
