S-Range Chair wins prestigious Design Guild Award
DESIGN GUILD MARK AWARDED TO CLASSIC MID CENTURY CHAIR
The S230 dining chair has been awarded the prestigious Design Guild Mark.
Originally designed in the 1960s by mid century pioneers John and Sylvia Reid, the mark was awarded following the reissue of the chair as part of the John & Sylvia S-Range.
Awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, the Design Guild Mark aims to drive excellence and raise the profile of British design and innovation.
Sylvia Reid, 94, welcomed the award, and said: “I am delighted and amazed that the S230 dining chair has been awarded a Design Guild Mark after all this time.
“Of all our furniture designs, John and I always felt that this piece had a particular simplicity and refinement. It is extraordinary to feel that it is so up-to-date.”
The S230 is an elegant dining chair made from a quality grade of stainless steel to reduce risk any rusting, and a small contoured African Walnut seatback.
The comfortable seat pad is made from high quality aniline leather with a clean and consistent natural grain pattern, available in black or cream. A unique feature of the chair is its swivel feet, specifically engineered for stability.
The chair featured on the front cover of Design magazine in 1960, and along with the S-Range was accepted by the Council of Industrial Design for inclusion in their Design Index.
The John & Sylvia S-Range was reissued last year by the Reid’s son Dominic Reid OBE, and Nicholas Radford, md of Nathan Furniture and son of the original S-Range manufacturer. The S-Range will be on display at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week in the British Collection in the Crypt on the Green, Clerkenwell, from May 21 to 23 www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com/british-collection/
